Tour Details

Journey with us below ground to see the ancient salt beds that store radioactive waste created
as far back as the Cold War.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a Department of Energy (DOE) facility established in 1999 to safely isolate and dispose of transuranic waste. WIPP is the world’s third deep geological repository licensed to permanently dispose of radioactive waste. It is located 26 miles outside of Carlsbad and employs more than 1,000 people.

During this exclusive virtual tour, visit disposal rooms located nearly a half mile below the surface (2,150 feet) where over 91,000 cubic meters of waste have been deposited. Develop an understanding of how transuranic radioactive waste is produced, handled, and stored, and learn how the unique geologic characteristics of the Delaware Basin facilitate long-term storage operations in New Mexico.
